Prof Kevin Cassar is Consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon, Clinical lead at the Vascular Unit, Mater Dei Hospital. He is Professor of Surgery at the University of Malta. He tutors on the Masters in Vascular Surgery programme at the University of Edinburgh.
Prof Cassar was previously Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen. Prof Cassar set up the Vascular Unit at Mater Dei Hospital. He introduced endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery and helped set up a national screening programme for abdominal aortic aneurysms. He established a vascular one-stop clinic as well as introduced a formal revascularisation programme for limb salvage. He also introduced endovenous radiofrequency ablation and cyanoacrylate glue ablation surgery to Malta’s health service.
He established the vascular laboratory at Mater Dei Hospital after developing a Masters in Vascular Ultrasonography with the University of Malta. The lab provides a national infrainguinal bypass graft surveillance programme, an aneurysm surveillance programme, and comprehensive vascular scanning services. Together with Dr Tonio Piscopo, Prof Cassar set up the Malta Foundation Programme and was its director for 10 years. He set up a postgraduate training programme for Vascular Surgery. Prof Cassar represents Malta on the European Board of Vascular Surgery. He has published extensively in high impact factor journals including the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, The Journal of Vascular Surgery, Medical Teacher, The Surgeon, The British Journal of Surgery. He has supervised and examined several Masters and PhD students.
