Dr Cherilyn Fenech is a distinguished consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management, currently serving as the Acute Pain Lead at Mater Dei Hospital in Malta. Her expertise spans a comprehensive range of pain management, including low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, fibromyalgia, and complex headache disorders.
Dr Fenech’s academic journey includes a fellowship in chronic pain at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London in 2012. She achieved the highest marks in the World Organization of Pain Management Fellowship, becoming the first Maltese and the first female worldwide to receive the distinguished Hassenbusch prize. She continued her work in London as a consultant until 2018, where she further specialized in advanced techniques for treating chronic pain and headaches using ultrasound and X-rays.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Fenech is dedicated to advancing pain management education and research. She has published several significant studies and contributed to prominent medical literature. She is actively engaged in teaching and mentoring within the healthcare community. She serves as the Educational Supervisor for Chronic Pain at Mater Dei Hospital since 2020 and has contributed to educational resources such as the “Interventional Pain: A Step-by-Step Guide for the FIPP Exam.” She has also been involved in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching roles, including lecturing, supervising, and examining medical students at institutions like the University of Malta, King’s College London and Queen Mary University of London. Additionally, she trains junior medical staff in practical skills, highlighting her commitment to advancing medical education.
